How come in the UK teens can take Philosophy, Psychology, and Hair & Beauty as subjects?

Is it a given.. or they can pick literally anything they want and there's no requirements like you need ___ years of [insert class here] to graduate? i i wish my school had philosophy as an elective! haha i was watching the Skins tv show and was surprised
