What is the average yearly income for a hairdresser?

I've read that the average here in America is $24,000. My aunt used to be a stylist, and she saved her money and opened her own salon. After 15 years, she sold her half of the business to her partner and has never had to work since. My former next-door neighbor is a top stylist for Sebastian Hair Products, she charges $200 for a haircut, and she travels all over the world conducting hair shows. She makes a lot of money. I have another friend who is a stylist, and she got a chair in an upscale salon, the kind where you never walk out the door for less than $100, and she just bought her first house at age 23. So I think it depends on where you work. You do have to build your own client base, but in a busy salon that won't be difficult. I think the $24,000 figure I read last year represents those who work part time and those who work in the chain salons like Fantastic Sam's and Grondin's, which we have a lot of in the U.S., and they only charge $15.00 for a haircut, which means they're getting a $3.00 tip. The stylist I use now is 22 and just starting out. I don't know how much money she makes, but she does a great job on my hair, and I tip her 20 to 50 percent, which is about $20.00 every visit. If she ever moves away, I'm going to need antidepressants. I think building clients is the key, and when someone loves your work, they will practically die for you to do their hair. What is the average yearly income for a hairdresser?
